   All seals will eventually leak, but it’s crucial to identify the root cause. Let’s take a look at some common causes of leakage:

  (1) Leakage caused by deformation of the contact surfaces between the stationary and rotating rings. When the end-face pressure is excessively high, the frictional heat can easily induce thermal deformation in both the stationary and rotating rings. Of course, unevenness during the installation of components can also lead to end-face deformation. Treatment method: Open the mechanical seal and check whether the ring bases have become overheated. If thermal deformation has occurred, and if necessary, reassemble the components according to the specified guidelines.

  (2) Friction caused by particles and other impurities entering the crystal. Method: After opening, inspect the end faces for wear and repair accordingly based on the specific condition.

  (3) The auxiliary seal lost its elasticity due to improper material selection, resulting from the working medium. Solution: Replace the seal with a new one and select a matching mechanical seal.

  (4) The perpendicularity error of the sealing surface axis is too large. Treatment method: Inspect the pump shaft’s winding; if it exceeds the standard, repair or replace it.

  (5) The stationary ring and the circular package-type scale cannot promptly compensate for wear caused by displacement. Treatment method: Clarify.

  (6) Long-term operation has caused severe wear on the end faces of the seal. Solution: Replace the mechanical seal.

  In short, since the leakage is caused by the factors mentioned above, the damaged parts should be thoroughly inspected and analyzed during equipment maintenance to identify the root causes and address them accordingly.

When any of these failures occur, it is essential to promptly replace the mechanical seal and identify the underlying issues during operation, thereby facilitating preventive maintenance efforts.

  During operation, if the pump impeller experiences excessive axial runout or the shaft undergoes periodic vibrations, and the process parameters are unstable, the pressure in the seal chamber will frequently fluctuate, leading to periodic leakage from the mechanical seal. To address these causes of mechanical seal leakage, it is essential to strictly control the axial runout during installation and ensure that the clearance between the worn parts and bearings is properly maintained. The shaft's circular runout should also be kept within the specified tolerances; if necessary, the shaft should be replaced with a new one.
