Problems with the normal operation and maintenance of mechanical seals

Problems with the normal operation and maintenance of mechanical seals:
1. Preparations and precautions before startup
a. Conduct a comprehensive inspection to ensure that the mechanical seal, as well as its associated devices and pipelines, are fully installed and meet the technical requirements.
b. Before starting the mechanical seal, conduct a static pressure test to check for any leakage. If significant leakage is detected, identify the cause and take measures to eliminate it. If the problem persists, disassemble the seal for inspection and reinstallation. Typically, the static pressure used for the test is 2–3 kg/cm².
c. Turn the pump by hand in the direction of rotation and check whether the movement is smooth and uniform. If the pump is difficult to turn or does not move at all, you should check whether the assembly dimensions are incorrect or whether the installation is properly aligned.
2. Installation and Shutdown
a. Before starting, the sealing cavity should be kept fully filled with liquid. When conveying solidified media, use steam to heat the sealing cavity and melt the medium. Before starting, it is essential to turn the shaft manually to prevent sudden startup from causing the soft seal ring to break.
b. For mechanical seals that utilize an external seal oil system, the seal oil system should be started first. After shutdown, the seal oil system should be stopped last.
c. After the hot oil pump is shut down, do not immediately stop the cooling water for the seal chamber and the end-face seal. Instead, wait until the oil temperature at the end-face seal drops below 80 degrees Celsius before stopping the cooling water, to avoid damaging the sealing components.
3. Operation
a. If slight leakage occurs after the pump is started, it should be observed for a period of time. If the leakage does not decrease even after continuous operation for 4 hours, the pump should be stopped and inspected.
b. The pump’s operating pressure should be stable, with pressure fluctuations not exceeding 1 kg/cm².
c. During operation, the pump should be kept from experiencing cavitation to avoid dry friction on the sealing surfaces and subsequent seal failure.
d. The sealing condition should be checked regularly. During operation, if the leakage exceeds the standard—no more than 5 drops per minute for heavy oils and no more than 10 drops per minute for light oils—then, if there is no improvement within 2-3 days, the pump should be stopped and the sealing device inspected.
